A denture is a custom fit removable appliance that is worn everyday that replaces your missing teeth. It may replace some of your teeth (partial denture), or all of your teeth (full denture).

In some extreme cases where one or more teeth need to be extracted, a ‘false’ tooth is used to replace the extracted tooth.

Dentures are used for aesthetic and practical purposes, and are usually more cost-affective to the alternate bridgework or implants. Dentures can aid in chewing and in the case of full dentures, ‘prop-up’ the facial structures.

There are two main types of dentures including:

  1. Acrylic dentures
  2. Cobalt Chrome dentures

Acrylic dentures are a pink ‘plastic’ material which blends in to your natural oral tissues.

Cobalt Chrome dentures are metal in appearance but are minimally visible to others, and are much more durable.

The type of denture that is recommended to you will depend on a number of factors including: how many missing teeth the denture will replace, where in the mouth the missing teeth are, your opposing biting forces, and personal preference.

The dentist will discuss these options with you at your consultation visit, and provide you with a detailed recommend based on your individual circumstances.

Denture completion usually requires anywhere from 3-6 appointments (depending on the type of denture), usually spaced 1 week apart.

The denture is made by the dental technician, in the dental laboratory.
